First, lets gather a list of materials – most of these you may already have on hand, like I did! The only thing I needed to purchase was the boards for the actual garden bed, as that might be the case for most of you:)
List of items needed (literally everything):
- Cedar Picket Fence Boards (6 total at $3.28 ea) = $19.68
- 2×4 (I used 4 ft of a 2×4 I had laying around, but just be sure to avoid pressure treated wood)
- 1×2 (only used 2 ft, again, of what I had on hand)
- Power drill
- Drill bit
- Wood Screws exterior
*Note: for long-term garden beds, use cedar wood, and always use non-treated!
Step one – Cut the boards:
Cut two cedar boards in half, to make four 3ft long boards. For my garden bed, I made it 6×3 ft rectangle to keep it nice and simple π
Step Two & Three – screw in stabilizer wood:
Stack two 6ft planks side by side (see picture), on flat ground, grab your 1x2s and cut them to the same height as the two boards, place them in the middle. Then grab your drill bit and drill some pilot holes – I did 4 total screws for this part (1.25″). Repeat this with the other set of 6ft boards. Note: you can saw off the “dog-ear” if you like, but it doesn’t effect performance, so I skipped this step!
Next, do the same thing with the 2x4s, except these will be placed in the corners. I placed them flat on the 6ft boards and screwed them in – see reference pics π After attaching to the 6 ft boards, then grab your 3ft boards and screw those into the same 2x4s, I did mine from outside in here. Be conscious of where you put the screws so they don’t run into each other here.

That’s All!
You now have a perfect garden box, ready for planting and growing!! Yay!
